Three Wedding Tunes refers to the idea of wedding as the basis of the culture of this little Siberian people named the Udmurts. Birth was thought to be Marriage to Life. Wedding was Marriage to a Man/Woman and Death was Marriage to Death or Marriage held the other way round.
The text of the Three Wedding Tunes consists of ancient Udmurt prayers, magical incantations, laments, lullabies, wedding and funeral songs. The performance makes use of authentic Udmurt folk music; there are some occasional pieces of melodies based on folk music composed by Olga Alexandrova specially for this performance. The costume is based on the 18th century North Udmurtian folk costume, but it has a wider symbolic significance. The puppets have been made according to the motifs of the archaic sacral woodcraft of various nations. Thanks to this performance which raises philosophic and common problems to all mankind the occidental spectators became acquainted with folklore of the Udmurts and culture of the Finno-Ugrian peoples.
Using wooden, primitive puppets and a drum, Olga Alexandrova leads us towards an archaic past done with dances, prayers, songs and incantations in Urdmut.
